Charles Bennett Obituary

Charles V. "Ty" Bennett passed away early Friday, December 3, 2021. He was born in 1939 in Bainbridge, Georgia to V.R. "Babe" and Grace Ruth Bennett. A Bainbridge High School graduate, he started at nose tackle on the Bearcat’s football team and was manager of the basketball team.

Shortly after marrying Irene Sellers in 1960, Ty and his new bride moved to Miami to help his parents operate their business. During their ten years in Miami, they started a family and Ty began a youth sports coaching career. He worked as a top insurance agent for Western & Southern Life Insurance for twenty years. He started a second career with the Florida Department of Revenue where he worked for twenty-three years.

His true calling was coaching and mentoring youths beginning in Miami and continuing in Quincy in 1971. Ty became head coach of the American Legion little league football team and the Pacers basketball team in Quincy and won numerous championships with each. Baseball and softball season found Ty behind home plate calling balls and strikes. The lives he touched are countless as are the number of stories told about the plays he ran and the nicknames he gave.

Ty is survived by his wife, Irene; sons: Armando and Charles (Kitty) and daughter Christy; granddaughters: Gracie, Matti and Murphy; great-grandson: Hayden; only sister: Patsy (Lee) Blair; and brother-in-law: Arthur (Linda) Sellers.

Not only did Ty raise his own family but he also served as father and grandfather to his extended Lee family whom he loved as his own. Ty is survived by numerous family members and loving friends.

A memorial service will take place at Thomas Memorial Baptist Church, 1001 W. Washington St, Quincy, Florida at 10:30 AM on Saturday, December 11, 2021.
