David Lee Oakes

David Lee Oakes, 72 of Jacksonville passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020 at his home surrounded by family. He was born May 16, 1948 in Richmond, Virginia and went on to serve with the United States Navy. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, David relocated to the Jacksonville area and became a truck driver and dedicated over thirty years to B&W Trucking. Mr. Oakes liked to keep himself busy in his free time and had numerous hobbies, most notably golf. He was an avid golfer and had quite the golf game. Other hobbies included fishing and boating, as well as coaching little league for several years.

In his later years during his marriage with Mrs. Lydia, they enjoyed traveling together to visit family and thrift shopping. They both felt that God had truly brought them together at a point in their lives when they needed each other the most. David will be remembered as a caring and accommodating man who always put others before himself.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and a wife: Mrs. Linda Oakes.

He leaves behind to cherish the memories, his beloved wife of 10 ½ years, Mrs. Lydia (Sellers) Johnson-Oakes of Jacksonville; daughter: Christina Oakes of Washington; grandson: Chandler Oakes of Washington; one expected great-grandchild; step-sons: Dale (Donna) Johnson of Jacksonville and Charles (Deanna) Johnson of Lake City; sister: Sue Ridgeway of North Carolina; four step-grandchildren; numerous step-great-grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends.

A Celebration of David’s Life will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Forbes Funeral Home, Macclenny. Rev. Robert Bulmer will be officiating the services.
