Katherine Bessie Powell

Ms. Katherine Bessie Powell, 91 of Lake City passed away Saturday, May 23 with her family by her side.

She was born April 6, 1929 in Eastman, Georgia to the late Mr. George W. and "Mollie" (Nettles) Newman. Ms. Powell had been a resident of Columbia County for the last 10 years after spending nearly 60 in Lake Wales.

She spent over 40 years working for Citrus World, best known for their Donald Duck Orange Juice.

Ms. Katherine loved her family and her late husband, Mr. Warren, dearly. She and Warren loved going to listen to live country music. She was an avid crotchetier. Mostly, Ms. Katherine enjoyed a private life. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Branford Ward.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother: Roscoe, sisters: Winnie, Mildred and Rebecca, nephew: Billy Kerce, and her beloved husband: Warren Powell.

She leaves behind: her niece and caregiver: Janice (Mike Dees) Kerce of Lake City; sister: Shirley (Nevin) Nettles of Lake City; sister-in-law: Pat Newman of Titusville; nieces: Jane (Bob) Peacock of Lake City, Ruth (Wayne) Law of Welborn, Belinda Boyd of Gainesville, and Nancy (John) Miklos of Orlando; nephews: Jimmy (Cheryl) Nettles, Timmy (Charlotte) Nettles, Scott Nettles all of Lake City, and George (Andrea) Newman of Mims; as well as other family members.

Private family graveside services will be held at Lake Wales Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.
