Shirley Rae Tompkins

Shirley Rae Tompkins, age 85 of Jacksonville and previously of Live Oak, passed away Thursday, April 1, 2021 at the Ortega Gardens Alzheimer’s Special Care Center. Shirley was born on July 25, 1935 to the late Mr. Hubert and Thelma (Bennett) Tobias in Northampton, Massachusetts. She would proudly serve in the United States Navy and was stationed at U.S. Naval Station Newport Rhode Island. She would work as a medical assistant for several years. Ms. Shirley loved animals and helping others. She also enjoyed cooking. She attended First Baptist Church of Maxville, which she felt was her church home.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband: Mr. Gregory Tompkins.

She is survived by her daughters: Susan (Phil) Simon of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Kathy McDonald of Greenfield, Massachusetts, and Linda Schranz of Westhampton, Massachusetts; grandchildren: Harry McDonald of Kansas City, Kansas, Rachel Simon of Washington, D.C., and Ian Simon of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania; brother: Russell (Helen) Tobias of Jacksonville; as well as extended family members.

Memorialization will be by cremation and a private service will be held at a later date.
